Hard Working Single Parents

Submitted by: Tom McBeth and Beverly Brewster

The battlefields are crowded with “Hard Working Single Parents” on a mission to educate and motivate community leaders, nonprofit organizations and community stakeholders about the importance of House Bill HR279.  We are thankful for the support and guidance we are receiving to move forward from the charge being lead by State Representative Valencia Stovall, GA General Assembly, HD 74.

For the past three years the National Leadership Group, Inc., Beverly Brewster, Executive Director has worked diligently with other nonprofits such as REAL Parents, Inc, and Dekalb County Commissioner, Larry Johnson, Dekalb Initiative for Families and Childrens, Dekalb Library System, Clayton County leaders and local nonprofit organizations to bring awareness and support about the urgent need to educate and organize single parents about important issues that impact our communities.

According to the U. S. Census statistics 2010, in the United States today, there are nearly 13.6 million single parents raising over 21million children.  More than 80 percent of moms with spouses are employed, but only 60% of single mothers are in full-time jobs.  Single parents have more than tripled as a share of American households since 1960.

Information from Georgia “Spotlightonpoverty” statistics indicate that 39 percent of children living in single parent families with a 16 percent poverty rate and 40 percent of single parents with related children that are below the poverty rate (www.spotlightonpovertyandopportunity).

Many single parents are working two and three jobs just to make ends meet and provide for their families.  In November 2017, the National Leadership Group, Inc., hosted a single parent’s event, “Can We Talk” for single parents to voice their concerns and needs by discussing issues and problems that impact their families.  Ms. Brewster plans to offer several town hall meetings around the State of Georgia to promote the education and awareness of issues and concerns of single parent families regarding their need to:

  1. Get more involved in the education of their children
  2. Become knowledge about political issues and wise voters
  3. Identify programs and services available for single parent families
  4. Build Health and Financial Wealth through Financial Literacy Classes
  5. Become more involved in Parent Engagement in Schools

We support the needs and concerns of single parents and coordinate the need for additional resources that will offer job training, job placement and services that will change their lives.

HR 279 is a bill designed to make March 21st a Georgia Single Parents Day.  We believe that single parents should be motivated and encouraged to participate in the local school systems of education and become wise intelligent voters for programs that impact their lives.

Please help us get HR 279 passed this year. You can log onto www.nationall.org and sign the Single Parent Day Petition or call Beverly Brewster 770-826-0853 for more information.

Happy Holidays,
